A double tour / Leda / Web of Passion / France / Italy / 1959

Chabrol’s third film marks the good and the bad of his very uneven career. For the first time, his interest in the bourgeois family comes to the fore, even if here it’s vitiated with a misogyny (Gegauff’s contribution?) that he will, fortunately, later lose. This is his first colour film, so there’s a fine aestheticism at work; unfortunately, there’s so little to the plot that it ends up being a fairly empty exercise in style.
