“Yes!”
A characteristic Schwarzenegger vehicle from his string of late-80s hits, The Running Man bares some peculiar distinctions. It’s the second film in one year to star both the present governor of California and the former governor of Minnesota. It features tiny cameo appearances, not only by Ventura and Jim Brown, but also by Mick Fleetwood and Dweezil Zappa. The dance sequences were quite unmistakably choreographed by Paula Abdul. The film was directed by Paul Michael Glaser (TV’s Starsky).
For all of these dubious distinctions (to say nothing of the film’s direct ripping off of Watkins’ Punishment Park and The Gladiators), the first half is actually quite enjoyable and Richard Dawson’s performance is immensely enjoyable, even impressive. But once the action increases, the quality of the plot and of Schwarzenegger’s one-liners quite sharply decreases.
