The Long Kiss Goodnight / USA / 1996

We didn’t even know we needed Shane Black until he was gone, and even then we didn’t really notice he’d been missing until he returned, triumphant, with last year’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Blockbusters have become so damn serious in the past few years, between the po-faced cod- philosophising of the Matrix movies and the epic emotional grandeur of Lord Of The Rings, there doesn’t seem to be much room left for the traditional smart talking, straight shooting losers at which Black excels. This movie is a perfect case in point- the plot is nowhere, the action predictable, but the dialogue is glorious, one liners to die for, and so many of them.
