Equinox / USA / 1970

The acting, characterizations, and narrative that found Equinox are too poorly manifested to be considered incidental to the otherwise accomplished effects showcase. But this is clothesline filmmaking, and as such it’s a remarkably sturdy enterprise given its obvious flaws. Although I am quick to dismiss the narrative, I should note that it presages the very scenario that founds The Evil Dead, in which a summoning text establishes a much more frantic and nondescript menace. With Equinox, you’ll have to settle for a Harryhausen-esque giant with what appears to be ferret hides for his thighs and forearms.
