Big Trouble In Little China / USA / 1986

Wittingly or no, Carpenter’s much derided chopsocky epic may actually stand as the most forward looking American action movie of the ‘80’s, anticipating as it does the current preponderance of Eastern techniques in mainstream Western cinema- wire-fu, slam cutting, ludicrously complex mythical backstories that bear little relevance to the actual events on screen. The uneven blend of East and West makes for schizophrenic but insanely entertaining cinema, and Jack Burton is a classic Carpenter/ Russell hero. It really is all in the reflexes.
