Verhoeven’s three classic dystopias- Robocop, Starship Troopers and this- seem to grow in stature and relevance with each passing year. Here, you’ve got the rise of corporations, justifiable terrorism, a grubby war in a desert landscape turning nastier by the day, all held together with the kind of smash- and- grab existential postmodernism that’d make Baudrillard puke. Admittedly, you’ve also got Big Arn trying his best to wisecrack and an all time classic smackdown between Rachel Ticotin and Sharon Stone, but let’s focus on the highbrow stuff, okay?
