Miami Vice / USA / 2006

Zero chemistry between Gong Li and Colin Farrell (this does matter – as their relationship is central to the film’s plot), but otherwise an impeccable Michael Mann thriller.

I’m glad I was able to get into this movie for free, ‘cause lemme tell you, I wouldn’t pay to see it. The first half is dull as hell, and the dialogue is plain and dispassionate, unless you are a undercover cop or a Columbian druglord, in which case you’ll probably find the dialogue riveting. As stated above, Gong Li and Colin Farrell take a boat to Havana, have a drink, and then engage in a PG-13 sex scene, which is unusual for an R-rated film. It’s cold and mechanical, with no emotion coming from either actor. Things start to pick up around the second act, including a very impressive hostage rescue scene in an airport trailer park. But it’s not enough to redeem this otherwise bland and uninteresting film.

Please notice that Michael Mann both wrote and directed “Miami Vice.” He only directed “Collateral,” leaving writing duties to Stuart Beattie. Which was the superior film?
