Gloria / USA / 1980

I adore Gena Rowlands. Between her balls out performance and the gritty landscape of late 70s/early 80s New York (effortlessly captured by Mr. Cassavetes), this is great stuff.

The opening arial sequence is supremely majestic. I can’t count how many movies open with helicopter shots of Manhattan, but the way Cassavettes snakes us up the East River and then coldy dumps us in a Bronx city bus in the midst of the crisis is startlingly moving.

For some reason I have hard time matching “Cassavettes” with “arial sequence” in my mind. Seems oxy-moronic.

Gena has a shoot-out with the mob. How kick-ass is that?!
