Caravaggio / UK / 1986

My admiration of Michael Gough is strengthened by a great performance; my admiration of Derek Jarman is weakened by a non-linear story and pointless narration, though the visual stagings and allusions to Caravaggio’s paintings are astounding.

The interpretation of Caravaggio’s paintings always amazed me in this film. Have you seen Blue by any chance? I saw it at a midnight screening and haven’t gotten it out of my head since.

No, unfortunately, the only other Jarman film I’ve seen is Edward II, which has its own moments of visual brilliance. Still, despite my misgivings about this film’s structure, I’ll be returning to Jarman in the near future. As you state above, he definitely sticks to your brain…which, in this case, isn’t a bad thing.
