The Queen / UK/France/Italy / 2006

Surprisingly effective (although I agree with Adam on the use of the stag). Albeit the tabloid topic, I didn’t find the tone of the film as sordid as I thought I might, and left wondering how exactly Diana made such an immense impact on much of England with her life and – I believe, more so – death. Helen Mirren as HRH Elizabeth II handles the Princess’s overpowering shadow with grace and remarkable talent.

I came from this film with a much greater appreciation for Princess Diana. It’s so easy to forget what a strong symbol she was – a true force. I can’t help but wonder what she would have made of our current quagmires. How would she have reacted to 9/11? the Patriot Act? Iraq? Abu Grahib and Gitmo? and would she have been able to continue her strong influence regarding these events?

Also, Michael Sheen is an immense joy to watch as Tony Blair although the protrayal is a bit too flattering for my political tastes. I hear he and Frears are planning a film starring Sheen as Blair [for the third time] detailing Blair’s downfall following his allegiance to George W. Bush.

Loved this film. I did not mind HRH’s “moment” with the stag, but after that the metaphor feels tired. Mirren is a screen goddess and Frears handles the royals with an adept and just hand.

I have Socttish cousins visiting, and their thoughts/opinions/insights bring the film’s message into sharper focus. They are of the mind that, if Charles becomes king, the monarchy is doomed. The consensus seems to be that William should be the new, “fresh face” of the monarchy. Interestingly enough, he is the very image of Diana.
