Sissy Frenchfry / USA / 2005

A geeky heir apparent to Napoleon Dynamite and “Strangers with Candy,” J.C. Oliva’s short film has a few exceptionally outlandish aspects (a school with French fries as a mascot, a cheerleading squad that dances a “salute to Indian American Heritage Week”) but is too distracted by its own message of tolerance.

Sissy Frenchfry, the assumedly gay president of the West Beach High student body, must defend his title against intolerant Bodey McDodey, the new kid in town, who preaches a message of “gender appropriate behavior” and “social Darwinism.” The filmmaker’s aim is clear, and luckily for us the path to the foreseeable message is peppered with amusing performances by Leslie Jordan as Principal Principle and Justin Dabuet as Sissy’s transgendered friend Dana Aquino. There’s also a cheerleader named Georgia Peach, a football coach known as Coach Bob, and the perky school secretary, Ms. Secretary.
