The inconvenient surroundings (first an lobby at LaGuardia, then an Embraer 170) didn’t dampen the viewing experience a bit. I first saw this in grad school and felt a bit restless, but it stuck, and subsequent viewings have increased my appreciation each and every time. Isn’t this just a pleasure to watch? Visually, with its coppery and rich, burnt brown tones that make me want to leaf through a Victorian photo album, along with the lamp lit interiors; I don’t like to use the word “striking,” but it hits the nail on the head here. Yes, the snowfall breaks my heart, but so does the look on McCabe’s face when he’s told Mrs. Miller is already occupied in her room. My favorite Altman film.
