Cape Fear / USA / 1991

At the tender age of 14, I was traumatized by this film upon its theatrical release: first, by its near-humorless emotional and sexual terrorism, and then by its shockingly true present-day mimicry of my beloved Mr. Hitchcock (by way of an unearthed Bernard Hermann and an aging Saul Bass). And these days, whatever one thinks of the rather incredible actions of its protagonists (two people brutally murdered downstairs? Time for a family vacation!) and DeNiro’s less-than-convincing Southern drawl (is he trying to teach them about loss or Laos?), the lusty vigor and detailed nerdiness with which Scorsese reanimates classical Hollywood is undeniably thrilling. “New Hollywood” had been making “Old Hollywood” throw-backs for years with limited success (American Graffitti, One from the Heart, New York, New York), but this one gets it right — and amps up the brutality to boot.
