The Long Goodbye / USA / 1973

Philip Marlowe is awakened some time after three in the morning, and from this instant onward he becomes caught in an irregular rhythm, a current that sweeps him in and out of jail, to and from his apartment, and back and forth between a chain of suspects involved in the murder he is investigating. The cinematography relays this perfectly—simple conversations are shot with a camera sweeping about them, lingering on a single gesture or response, or moving past the subject in anticipation of the following scene. This is a film you settle down with. You are lulled by it casual beauty.
