Long Day’s Journey Into Night / USA / 1962

Every so often I have to spend an evening with The Tyrones; Eugene O’Neil’s fictitious version of his own tormented family. Frankly, they remind me so much of, well, my own family that it’s a bit like coming home. The characters, naturally, are different, but it’s the language – that emotionally charged, stimulating, exhausting, jubilant, radiant, terrible, glorious use of language in this particular domestic setting that I love returning to time and again. Here’s a review of it that I did here.

It remains one of my top three films of all time.
