For some reason this was recommended to me by a so- called friend… It’s the sort of film you can imagine just about working on paper, onscreen it’s almost willfully unfunny, drowning in ‘surrealist’ gags and to- camera winks, setting up vaguely appealing character relationships and then destroying them with crass humour and endless mugging. Even Janeane Garofalo barely survives unscathed.

For God’s sake, why not just watch Meatballs?
Just because the comedy is mainstream does not mean it isn’t good.
If the kenyan runner in the game of Capture the Flag or the jacket switching love scene didn’t make you laugh, then you, my good sir, are devoid of humor.
Plus, after going to a summer camp for 2 years and seeing meatballs and Earnest goes to Camp (a classic), I can say this is a perfect parody of summer camp movies. Not only does it perfectly re-create the feel of being in a summer camp, but it also pokes fun at the abundant and horrible “campy” (hah, a pun) elements of camp movies, while still embracing them and showing a true fondness for the genre.
Instead of saying it’s not funny, just say you didn’t “get it”.
No, sorry, Morty. I got it. I understood and even appreciated what the filmmakers were trying to do, a parody of camp movies is a perfectly solid idea, and with the cast they had there was simply no excuse for the film to be as bad as it was.
And it has absolutely nothing to do with being mainstream… Airplane is the funniest movie ever made, and for my money The Naked Gun isn’t far behind, both hugely commercial movies. This seemed to be trying for some kind of indie version of those kinds of movies, but there just weren’t enough good jokes. I mean, an angry Vietnam vet? Again?
In response to your comment, all I can say is that if this film made you laugh consistently then you, my good sir, are very, very easily pleased.
I feel sorry for anyone who couldnt appreciate this film.
I didn’t find it appealing either. I really liked some of the other projects of Showalter and Wain – the State and Stella especially – but this one fell flat for me. Maybe I’ll give it another go sometime.
