Sweet Smell of Success / USA / 1957

It’s delightful to see how intimidating Burt Lancaster is as slimy New York City columnist J.J. Hunsecker, especially when your best memory of the man is his warm and fuzzy portrayal of “Moonlight” Graham in Field of Dreams. As down and dirty as its reputation, Sweet Smell of Success also features a soulless, blood sucking Tony Curtis, whose desperation to make it big so well embodies the nasty reputation of this town.

Ha. Lancaster is always intimidating to me. Oh, he can be charming, winning, warm and wonderful, but always with a slight edge – you never know what to expect from the ex-tightrope walker. I think I like him in everything he’s done. Naturally, some performances are more memorable than others but he’s one of those actor/personalities who’s always compelling to watch. That said, I prefer hima s a good guy, though he gives a wonderfully acid portrayal in Sweet Smell of Success.
