Along with I Am Legend, this film marked an ironic end-of-year viewing for my family: Stories about the end of civilization. In this case, Godard’s 105-minute work in omnipotent loathing. He hates contemporary filmÑexpressed in the famed eight-minute tracking shot meant, I hear, to bore his audienceÑhe hates the world, he hates religionÑIs that a gun-wielding hippie Jesus?Ñand most of all he hates himself, despite having come off the best decade of his or any filmmaker’s career. A few months ago I watched Notre Musique and found myself wondering when, between then and Breathless, did Godard’s attitude change. Now I know.
