Jeff Bridges is perhaps my favorite actor for his ability to suit roles more so than his ability as an actor. I find it rare to laud an actor’s invisibility in a role, and too often I’m aware of the performance instead of the character. This is to Bridges’ immense credit, being that in the span of a little more than a decade he played a software programmer trapped in a videogame, an alien, an alcoholic disc jockey, and here a sort of super hero survivor of a grisly plane crash. (This is not to mention his best role in The Big Lebowski.) These are not roles that foster nuance or subtlety—they encourage performances.
I don’t have too much to add in regard to this film in particular, only that the plane wreck (seen in flashbacks throughout) is absolutely superlative filmmaking.
