WR: Mysteries of the Organism / Yugoslavia/USA / 1971

It took me two viewings to fully digest the film enough to form an opinion on it. I’ve determined that this is largely due to titanic expectations I had for it after spending years reading about it in Amos Vogel’s essential text Film as a Subversive Art. Essentially I knew the ins and outs of the film before having seen a single frame and I had difficulty removing myself enough from the opinions of others to find out what I thought about it.

I like it. Not as much as I like Makavejev’s follow up Sweet Movie, but still a powerful piece of cinema art. It just doesn’t feel as “alive” (for lack of a better term) as Sweet Movie to me, although I think WR is a better example of Makavejev’s directorial abilities. This is a perfect example of the type of film that my opinion of will change with each viewing.
