Coal Miner’s Daughter / USA / 1980

Is the reason there aren’t more (theatrical) movies about the lives of country singers because they’d all have the same plot? Mountain town, troubled marriage, passel of brats, hard graft, the open road, the Grand Ol’ Opry, rhinestones, big houses, even bigger hair, drinking problems‚Ķ etc. To be fair, Apted’s film does complete justice to Loretta’s story, and it’s a story worth telling. If only you could shake the feeling you know exactly where things are going next.
