Land of the Minotaur / The Devil’s Men / USA / UK / Greece / 1976
“Half Man-Half Beast Trapped in a World Forgotten by Time”
This bizarre tale of idol worship in modern Greece proves once and for all that at no time during his occasionally illustrious career did Donald Pleasence turn down a role. Playing the part of a pious priest determined to end the community’s regular blood sacrifice to a giant Minotaur statue, Pleasence faces off against an evil sorcerer played by none other than Peter Cushing, who throughout acts as if wondering how he found himself in the midst of such rubbish.
On the plus side, if we can call it that, this is one of the few Greek horror films that you’ll ever happen across, and the presence of Pleasence and Cushing provide at least a modicum of entertainment. However, the film is irredeemably diminished by scene after scene of impenetrable blackness, and also suffers from a befuddling plot, and poorly drawn characters. Even if we could see what was going on, there’s little chance this story of good, evil, and unidentified tourists milling about a depopulated Grecian backwater would make much sense.
