Scream Bloody Murder
Claw of Terror / USA / 1973

“I get groceries for you, and art stuff, and kill people, and do you appreciate it? No. N-O.”

With an opening shot that features a boy running over his father with a tractor, and then running over himself with a tractor, it’s easy to fall under the spell of this bizarre film, and mistakenly assume that it’s going to be an action-packed gore fest. Soon enough, however, we realize that we’re in the midst of a psychosexual drama about a boy with a hook for a hand; a boy who just can’t keep from slaughtering people when they remind him of his dead mother. Despite an ofttimes heavy-handed approach, though, the film is consistently intriguing, due mainly to the believable insanity of young Matthew. Even when the metronomic pace of the murders slows down a bit, and Matthew decides his goal in life is to abduct an artist/prostitute and force her to be his roommate, we’re still wondering what’s going to happen next—and when that hook hand is going to come into play.
