The Fall of the House of Usher
USA / 1928

By no means a literal adaptation of Poe’s famous story, this stunning silent short is about atmosphere, not plot. The expressonism-infused visuals – teeming with distorted faces and drifting coffins – linger in the mind. I hesitate to call the film nightmarish only because my nightmares have never looked so beautiful.
